History of the Department

The Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the Ternopil State Medical Institute was established on August 31, 1970.

The organizer of the department and its leader was appointed associate professor Saltykov Lydia Nikitovna, who after the defense of his doctoral dissertation in 1972 was awarded the title of professor.

From 1984 to 1986, the department was headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Vitaliy Kuzmich, Small.

From 1986 to 2004 - Professor Yedinak Alexei Nikolayevich. From 2004 to 2010, the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics was a part of the Department of General Surgery, from 2010 to 2014 - in the Department of Endoscopy with Minimally Invasive Surgery, Urology, Orthopedics and Traumatology of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education.

In 1998 a course of combustiology and plastic surgery was created, which was headed by professor V.V. Runner For the development and introduction of new methods of diagnosis and early surgical treatment of severe burns and their consequences, Volodymyr Vasyliovych was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology in 2002.

Since 1994, internship-traumatologists have been trained at the department with their subsequent certification, as well as classes with interns and cadets of other specialties.

Currently, the clinical base of the department is the Department of Traumatology, Anesthesiology and Reanimation of the Ternopil City Communal Hospital of Ambulance, the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology and the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care "Ternopil University Hospital" with a total bed fund of 162 beds.

Clinic staff members provide planned and emergency medical care to the population of the city and the region from traumatology, counseling patients in the city police number 1 and in the regional consultative polyclinic, organize and conduct scientific and practical clinical and pathomorphological conferences, the session of the association of orthopedists - traumatologists of the region.

Material and technical equipment of medical institutions (X-ray, ultrasound examination, computer tomography) allows students to be involved in the clinical and instrumental and hardware examinations of patients with consideration and interpretation of the results. In addition, students work out a line of practical skills in the center of simulation training in disciplines that are included in the matrix.

The clinical and scientific interests of the department are concentrated on the problems of providing qualified emergency and planned assistance to patients with polytrauma, as well as injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
